Cirque Treats Bloggers to a Show

Two weeks ago I spilled the beans on getting to see Cirque du Soleil Viva ELVIS for free. As promised, here is my review of the show.

I’d like to first mention that this was not my first Cirque show; I’ve seen Mystère, Beatles LOVE and Ovo. I’ve also seen several other arts and acrobatics shows like Le Rêve and Teatro Zinzanni, which I’ve really enjoyed. There’s something about sitting on the edge of my seat, seeing if the performers will make their next near impossible move, that I just live for.

ELVIS takes a unique spin and distinguishes itself from other Cirques in a couple different ways. First, this was is musical-inspired show where performers actually sang and played instruments on stage as part of the act (versus an orchestra ensemble offstage). Second, I found it a little less whimsical than other Cirques, although I don’t necessarily see that as negative factor. Most scenes were very easy to follow and understand, with familiar costumes, decor and stage backdrops. This show could be enjoyed by someone with minimal knowledge of Elvis altogether, and of all ages and backgrounds. Third, the theater in Aria was huge! Definitely the biggest auditorium of any of the Cirques I’ve seen. Our comped tickets were surprisingly close up too, so if you check out ELVIS, I’d definitely recommend paying for closer seats. There are some large stage elements than float, scoot, and fly in and out, so watch out!

Conclusions:  Since the show is musically inspired, you will see less acrobatics and more dancing, but that’s not to say there aren’t any stunts at all. Be prepared for a multifaceted, emotional, and colorful showcase of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

4/5 stars

p.s. I will be eternally in love with Elvis Presley.

About Viva ELVIS:

Viva ELVIS, a harmonious fusion of dance, acrobatics and live music, is a tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley. Nostalgia, modernity and raw emotion provide the backdrop for his immortal voice and the exhilaration and beauty of his music.

Created in the image of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll – powerful, sexy, whimsical, truly unique and larger than life – the show highlights an American icon who transformed popular music and whose image embodies the freedom, excitement and turbulence of his era.

Significant moments in his life – intimate, playful and grandiose – blend with the timeless songs that remain as relevant today as when they first hit the top of the charts. Viva ELVIS focuses on the essential humanity of the one superstar whose name will forever be linked with the history of Las Vegas and the entire world of entertainment: Elvis Presley.

Thanks very much to Jess & Jamie on the Cirque du Soleil (@cirque) Social Media & Interactive team! This was definitely one of the highlights of the BlogWorld weekend.

You I’m from Montreal and I realise as I am reading this post that I have never seen a Cirque du Soleil performance or show. I’ve seen them on TV but not in person… I’m gonna have to check it out and see the one they made with Micheal Jackson. I hope they will visit Edmonton.

Great review thanks for the update.

  2. Wow, that sounds like an amazing opportunity! 🙂
